![]() He takes Aang and leaves the people in peace. When Aang gives himself up so Zuko won’t harm the villagers, he keeps his word. Zuko also flat out disproves his own Lie early on. While Zuko believes this, Iroh from the start knows the Truth, and tries to guide Zuko to understand it. Zuko’s lie is that he is weak, and has dishonored himself. The lie is the “truth” about the world they perceive to be true, and must unlearn. In a bad character arc, the Want and the Need are utterly disconnected, and doing one does not lead to the other. Zuko Needs to redefine himself and his approach in order to learn the correct path to his Want. Or at least, the way he’s going about it. Zuko’s Want (to restore his honor) clashes with his Need (to determine his own destiny). They can’t get what they Want the way they are at the start of the story, so the character arc facilitates the development they Need to get what they Want. while for other characters, the Want and the Need oppose each other. Sometimes the Need is a stepping stone for the character to get what they want. The Need manifests in two forms: either cooperative or antagonistic with the Want. The Need answers in response to the Want by asking the character what they NEED to do or have happen. Originally posted by darkholyangel The Need The Want is the jumping off point of the character arc. If his Want didn’t require him to bother a twelve-year-old, Zuko probably wouldn’t even care about Aang. Capturing Aang is simply a vehicle to that Want. Zuko wants to redeem himself and restore his honor. Usually by the end of Act I, the character has established what they want. This is the character’s driving motivation at the start of the story, or by the point of the inciting incident. In antagonists and antiheroes, this is the tragic backstory moment that is the source of their bastardness. That he could never return home unless he brings the Avatar. The moment he was told that he had no honor. For Zuko, his ghost is the moment his father burned his face and banished him. This is the event that shaped their world views or motivates their goal. This is the moment in the character’s backstory that defines who they became.
